CITY POLICE COURT.

Saturday, May 8. (Before R. H. Leary, Esq,, and A. Mercer, Esq., J.Fs)

Drunkenness.— Hugh Montgomery, James Morrison, Alex. G. Allan, and Patrick Warren were each fined ss, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment; Henry Pearson 10s, or forty-eight hours’. —Samuel Stairey, alias Stracey, was charged on the information of James D. Hutton with forging a cheque fan the National Bank, West Taieri, for the payment of L 25 with the name of James White.—Prisoner had forged the name of his late employer to the cheque, and having paid it to prosecutor became uneasy, and, in consequence, went to the Police Station and stated that he had passed a valueless cheque. The case was brought before the Court, an<], as it transpired that the cheque hail been paid into the prosecutor’s banking account., the Bench held that it must be a valuable one, and declined to commit accused on his own sta 1 emeu t. He was accordingly discharg 'il, and on stating that he had forged the cheque, further inqui i s were instituted, and in dually passing the cheque the bank clerk (Martin) detected the forgery.—Prisoner was now charged with the graver offence, aud this being proved, he was committed for trial.
