An Unfounded Charge.— OnPatrick Walsh and Wb, Jacobs being placed in the dock on a charge of stealing a watch, the property of Wm. Symonds, Inspector Mallard asked that the men might be discharged. They were given into custody by_ prosecutor under peculiar circumstances, which no doubt justified him in taking that course, A watch very mysteriously disappeared from the vessel on which the men were employed. It disappeared immediately after the accused left the ship, and subsequent to their apprehension it was found by the prosecutor.—The accused were accordingly discharged.

An Absconder, —Fredk. Grey, ten years old, committed to the Industrial School on the Ist, and was charged with running away.—Ho was sent back to the School for four 1 years. Slt-grog Selling. —Richard Wm. Shepherd, of the late Royal Exchange Hotel, Walker street, was charged by Revenue Constable Hogan, with selling two glasses of beer.—Mr Cook defended. —On tbe 7th Inst, informant and Constable Woods visited accused’s house and were supplied with the drink by Mrs Shepherd, for which they paid one shilling.— The Bench were of opinion that a conviction must ensue, the offence having been committed. Counsel for the defence had made some remarks on the evidence of the witnesses for the prosecution; but he (Mr Fish) must say from the experience he had had on the Bench that he had not seen any witnesses pursuing this particular calling give their evidence in a better manner than Woods and Hogan had done. Defendant was fined L2O and costs, the Bench expressing a hope that the largeness of the fine would prevent further sly-grog selling, if he (Mr Fish) was on the Bench and a second case of this kind brought before him, he would inflict the fullest penalty, Lso.—William Armstrong, defended by Mr E. Cook, pleaded guilty, and was fined L2O and costs. A second charge was withdrawn.—Charges against Janet Collin, of Green Island, Samuel Perry, Michael Bolan, and Mrs Arrow were adjourned till tomorrow.
