The amount o( revenue received at the Customhouse on goods cleared for consumption this day was L 403 9s 6d,
General business has been somewhat retarded by the difficulty of obtaining teams for transmission of goods up the country- As, however, the harvest is about over and the wool season almost closed, the inconvenience is only likely to he temporary. But little change has taken place in prices during the week. Case brandy has, however, taken a step upwards, and Hennessy's may be considered about Is per case higher. Bulk has not participated in the advance, but is held firmly, at from 8s 9d to 9s. In other spirits no change has taken place. Ale and beer are unaltered in value. Yesterday Mr Henry Driver offered by auction the cargo of Tarravillo sugar by the Mary Blair, and a large portion found buyers. First whites realised from L 34 10s to L 35, counters LSI to L 32. The market is now moderately stocked with rice, which commands L 27 10s. The demand for kerosene is improving, and. prices (duty paid) rule from 2s to 2s 2d. Caudles are firm at lOjd. Butter, in parcels, has been fetching Is 4d, and is held firmly at that quotation. Bacon cannot be quoted. Cheese is difficult of v.urcho se at 9d. There is little change in dried fruit. .There are no sultanas in the market; Elemes, 7d to 7}d, arid currants as last quoted. Mr A. Mercer reports, for the week ending April Wii retail prices only.—Fresh butter, in }lb and 11b prmts, Is 8d to Is 9d per lb; fresh butter, in lumps, la 7d to Is Sd; powdered and salt butter, Is 6d to . , Salt butter in kegs, Is 6d par lb. Cheese of the best quality, Is. Boiled bacon, Is 2d j side bacon is at present very scarce, Is 44 per lb. Colonial hams are likewise very scarce. Is 4d to Is 5d per lb. English hams, Is 6d to Is 8d per lb. Eggs have been very scarce lately, and r are retailing at 8s per dozen. THE LABOE MAEKET. Mr Skene reports that the labor market has been during th; week, but is only temporarily so. Ploughing cannot progress much until the weather breaks. The building trade is very active. Female servants of the right sort are scarce. Wages:— Good form bands, from L6O to L 6 5; ordinary, 15s and 20s per week; couples, L 75 to L9O per year : roadmen, 9s and 10s per day; day labor in town, Is to Is 6d per hour; carpenters, 13s per day: cooks, barmen, grooms, &c., from 25s to 60s per week ; shepherds inactive; useful boys and girls, from 6s l°s per week; bouse servants, L 26, L 36, and L4O; hotel do, from L3B to LSO, and often higher • atorehanda qoi?t ; stonebreakers quiet. 9 (By Telegraph.) Wellington, April 17.—At the wool sale yesterdoy 34 bales of ewes’ wcol*in the grease, realised 9td per lb; 14 bales of lambs* wool, per lb; and 24 bales of merino, HJd per lb. A number of other lots went at easy prices. At the sale of light saddle hoises prices ranged from L 6 to L 7.
