SHOCKING BOAT ACCIDENT AT RIVERTON,
SIX LIVES LOST.
(From our own Correspondent, Rivebton, April 8. Six men, named Jas. M‘Donald, John Davis, James Parsons, Robert Guppies, John Dawson and John Thompson, started in the Government whaleboat—better known as the Government coffin —from Orepuki in search of the body of Memphis. It was blowing a heavy gale at the time, and the crew were advised not to risk themselves in such a frail boat in such rough weather. They were earnestly entreated by Memphis’s widow to go, and accordingly went. A portion of the boat was found on the beach yesterday, and it is feared all the men have been drowned. _ A search party started from hence this morning to go round the beach. The only hope is that the men may have got ashore on the centre island. They are all strong, able men, and good swimmers. The affair has thrown a gloom over the whole district, as should they be lost it will make nine deaths by drowning within the last fortnight.
2.58 p.m. The search party just returned. Six of the have been found. It appears there were seven in the boat, two being named John Thomson. The missing body is that, of Davis.
