CATTLE ON THE TOWN BELT.

He cannot be aware that only last week a charge preferred against one Charles - Armstrong, for allowing a sheep to stray, was dismissed by our worthy R.M. The sheep was described as “a pet lamb,” but I say if such ferscions creatures as these are allowed to rove with'impunity, there is little hope o! moving, the City authorities to stay the quiet and harmless cattle and horses. This brings to my mind a story a friend related to me a few days ago, continuing the ferboity ..f these woolly creatures, which some people are pleased to set up as a type of innocence s—“ In the early days of Victoria, two Yankees were on their way to Oastlemaine, but they the road, and, after wandering a few days, they came across a flock of sheep. Being terribly hungry, it was naturally suggested that they should catch and slay one. They succeeded, but whilst skinning it, the squatter made his appearance, and inquired in a peremptory manner if they knew whose sheen that was. “ Guess not!” coolly replied the Yankee, continuing his skinning, “but if-it’s yours you’d better keep ’em muzzled, for I don’t allow nobody’s darned sheep to bite me I” —I am, &c., Ba.
