WASTE LAND BOARD.

The weekly meeting of the Board was held this morning ; present—The Chief Commissioner, Messrs Bastings, Butterworth, Clark, and Strode.

The Superintendent’s memo,, with regard to the proposed investigation with the sale of sections 8 and 10, block 4, Reidstown, again came up for consideration. The Chief Commissioner : I propose that three members of the Board be appointed to investigate the matter. Air Strode : Would it not be better to refer it to the Government ? Mr Bast* iu ß ! a PP areQ t, by the memorandum, that the Government feel it—that they take the appointment of committee personally. Mr Strode: Yes, they fancy they have been ignored. The Chief Commissioner : They merely object to Mr Bathgate’s name being on the Committee. No Government servants would have to be examined. Mr Clark • I can assure the Board that the Government

does not object to the constitution of the Committee, but to one oemg appointed without its being consulted. The Chief Commissioner : If any Provincial Government servants are affected, then some General Government servants will be also. We are the only authorised body to appoint the Comuuttee. There has been a misdirection of work, and the Board must investigate it F propose that Messrs Strode. Clark, and Butterworth be appointed, to report to next meeting of the Board It affects myself and and Bastings, but does not affect the three other gentlemen.—Mr TUid • It affects us, I suppose, only in our official capacities. Must be put up in separate sections, MrP. Harrington stated that section 11, block 1, Ophir, was sold by auction without being burdened with valuation for improvements, v,z., Ll5O, in favor of the Roman jathoho Church. The site having been offered three times and not purchased by the Catholics, they are recommended to shift the building to another site, it being erected in the street.

The Board could not interfere. The Naseby D.L.O. forwarded Mr G. P Newmarch’s application to purchase his reside£c® a 5 Naseby. To be put up to auction. Ihe following applications to purchase land at LI per acre were made: W. D. Morrison, sections 2, 4, and 19, block Tuapeka East (approved) ; Mr Matthew Hay, sections 66, block 19, do (adjourned) : Mr Samuel Parsons, section 75, block 1, Waitahuna West (approved). Mr G. Spooner having withdrawn his application for the position of ranger of the interior, a fresh ballot was taken, Mr Robert Boulton being elected. Security to be given to the extent of L2JO.

The Tokomairiro inspector of slaughteryards reported on Messrs Popplewell and Baxter’s application for a license to occupy a site for a slaughteryavd. Site to be refused.

The appointment of ranger for the Naseby, Deep Bell, and Hyde blocks was reconsidered, and the present arrangement decided to be adhered to by the ranger of the northern districts, who can visit those places occasionally. The Chief Commissioner, at the instance of the Government, drew the attention of the Board to the non-fulfilment of conditions by 165366S on lands leased for coal-mining purposes at Preservation Inlet, where twenty or thirty leases have been granted bat nothing done. Referred to Provincial Solicitor for advice.
