SPORTING TIPS.

To the Editor. —After having been asleep for months past, that oracle, the ‘ Daily Times,’ has awoke to the reality of the fact that our annual races will come off next week; and its sporting prophet (?) “The Man in the Ditch*’ this morning blows an audaciously self-eulogistic blast with his own trumpet. This braggart has the coolness to say he “ was fortunate enough last year to spot the horses thfct were placed m most of the events at the March meeting”; so, as I have a little money to speculate on the approaching races, I thought I could not do better than follow the advice of this far-seeing guide to sporting men. First, however, I took the trouble to refer to the files of the ‘ Daily Times ’ for last March; and what do I find there ? Out of about seventeen races The Man in the Ditch” gave tips for only five; and he “spotted” the winner of only one of these—giving Lurline for the Cup, which was a certainty. He certainly named, but not m their order, the first three for the Maiden Plate, and placed the first three for the Cup; but in the St. Kilda Stakes he stuck to ft horse that ran third out of four starters, in the Publicans’ Handicap neither of the two he chose was placed, and in the Selling Race the horse he plumped for ran third. If “The Man in the Ditch ”is not more " fortunate ” this time, I think he had better stop in the ditch, for he will not be missed. Shall 1 follow this veracious tipster and slap my money on his choice? Not if I know it; for I fear he Is like myself, NDt Good Enough. Dunedin, March 16.
