LICENSED HOUSES.

To the Editor. Sir, It is a sail thing that whenever a number of residences are erected in a neighborhood some speculating individual also erects a large accommodation house, and applies to have "it licensed. ISfow, in the suburbs, where such a house is not on any main road, hut as stated before simply in the centre of a number of tradesmen’s residences, I submit there can be no reason for requiring a public house. It would only be placing temptation in men’s way, and I submit that the Licensing Commissioners should use their utmost endeavors to discourage what has lately become the custom, via.,, grantin" a license wherever applied for. What possible use to the public could an hotel in such a locality be, when every man has his own house, andean or ought to be at home, or at least in a neighbor’s house. It should be no excuse to say that the applicant has gone to great expense, &c., on the chance of getting the license. If he takes the chance let him do so; but do not give him a license because ho has laid out some money, notwithstanding the necessity of the house or the comfort of the neighbors. Again, hoping that the Commissioners in all such cases will consider as well the interests of the neighborhood us of the applicant, and apologising for troubling you, I am, &c , Cavcrsham, March 6. • .A.
