CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
To the Editor, SlB, —I think the police, or whoever the duty falls upon, are very slack in executing it. Cruelty to animals is the subject which I wish to bring before your notice. There is a gentleman in this City who breaks in, as he calls it, .his own horses, and when performing that work abuses the poor animals in a most horrible manner. Now, Mr Editor, I presume to know a little about horse flesh, consequently I am quite sure it is no way to bring a horse to subjection by lambasting him continually with a twelvefoot stock whip, thereby causing skin and hair to fly and exposing the red flesh. It is enough to drive any animal mad. I have seen this said horse-trainer using horses in the above-men-tioned manner, and think it is time Mr Rarey No. 2 had a drawing over the coals regarding his conduct. I hope for the future he will use • a lighter whip, and use it with better judgment. —I am, &c., _ "War. T. M. Gbegobt. Dunedin, March 2.
