RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
I Monday, February 8. (Before J. Bathgate, Esq., R.M., and E. M'Clashau, Esq., J.P.) Drunkenness. —_ Ellen Petwick was discharged with a caution; John Carlan was fined 40s, with the option of fourteen days’ imprisonment j Thomas Watson, 10s, or three days’, and for damaging the arresting constable’s uniform was further mulcted in the sum of 20s and ordered to pay the amount of damage (14al dune. ' —Thos. Jones, charged with this offence, in Princes street, was fined 2Us ; in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. Vagrancy.— Walter Clark, charged on the information of Sergeant Anderson with having no lawful means of support, was sent to gaol tor three months. Damaging Government Property. —Walter Clark was further charged with damaging the University Building, by cutting figures on it with a penknife,—The charge was proved by Sergeant Anderson, and Inspector Mallard . pointed out that several public buildings in the City were cut and defaced in such a manner as to spoil their appearance.—Accused was sent to gaol for a month.—Wm. Ball, charged with a similar offence, was let off with a caution Charge of Assault.— William BarHy was charged with assaulting the infant child of one Mary McLaughlin, at Dunedin, on February 5. —lnspector Mallard explained that the reason the accused was apprehended was thisHo was prosecutor in a case on Saturday, in which a woman was charged with assaulting him. In her defence, she stated tha't accused had laid on the bed on the body of a newly born child. and that its life was in danger. This caused the police to make enquiries, and Dr Brown who had examined the child, stated that no in’ juries had .been sustained in the manner stated. Under these circumstances, he would ask that the Bench might hear what Dr Brown had to say, and that the prisoner be then discharged till called upon again after the coroner’s inquest if necessary.-Dr Brown said that when he examined the child there were no marks or bruises on its body.—Accused was discharged ron 13 < * on his own recognisance of L2O. Alleged Manslaughter.— John Miller, for whom Mr Stout appeared, was charged with having, on January 14, feloniously billed Latherme Cameron, alias Ryder.—Mr Stout pointed out that the District Court sat that morning, therefore the case could not be taken. Inspector Mallard said that the case was a very long one, and would probably take the whole day. There were seven or eight witnesses to be examined, and their evidence'was very lengthy.—Mr Stout commented on the course pursued by the police. Accused was arrested and taken at once before a large number pt persons, alter which he was discharged, and then re-arrested, -His Worship: The police may have additions,! evidence. -Inspector Mallard : Is it fair to go into ttys now ’—Mr Stout promised to refer to it afterwards.—lnspector Mallard ? Your Worship will see the peculiar position of this case, lam prepared at once to go on with it, and have all my witnesses here. It the accused is liberated on bail, I do not say what will be done, but I fear what may be done. I wish the depositions to be taken before accused gets out on bail.—His Worship said that he must adjourn the case.-Inspect.tr Mallard pointed out that the witnesses might * y tampered with if the case was adjourned at that at ago.—His Worship: I can’t help that. The charge wiii b e adjourned till to-morrow, and accused may to bail io his own recognizance of LIOO, and two* sureties of LSO each.
