THE ST. ANOREW’S STEET CONFLAGRATION (?)

To the Editor.

Sir, -The ‘ Guardian ’ of Friday last gives a very exaggerated account—for what purpose I know not—of the accident which occurred at Mr J.mk’s bakery. It proceeds to state that “hut for the services of a few residents in the neigliborhood a conflagration would have been heard of in Sc. Andrew street,” &c,, &c. The true facts of the case are simply tlier. j At about aiim o’clock on Thursday evening the man in charge of Mr Jack’s bakery went to the bake-house to put the wood into the oven for next day’s use, and before putting in the green wood, took ou; two pieces of woods which had been put in before leaving the bako-housj at live o’clock. One of the pieces was laid on the end of the lid of the trough until the green wood was put into the oven. It showed no signs of lire when laid there. At half-past three o’clock next morning a baker passing to his work saw smoke issuing from the fan light over the ovens, and called at the fore man’s house, a few doo> s off, and told him he thought his wood had taken fire in the oven, an event which often occurs with bakers. The foreman, went over to the bakehouse, .arid found that Mr Jack had ex tinguished with a dipper of water what “might have been an alarming conll.igration.” About twenty-four inches by fifteen inches or the trough lid was burned.—l am, dtc., Veritas. Dunedin, January 3).
