TAPANUI.
(From our own Correspondent. ) January 22. The only excitement now prevalent is tne race meeting, which every one expects to he grand. Certainly the money to be run for is very liberal and has produced a number of good entries and, nodoubt, good racing. There is also to be the return cricket match between Switzers and Tapanui the day before the races. At the last match Tapanui won by one innings an thirty runs to spare, and I should say that its chances are equally goo 1 this time. The right of one b'-t’h—the Grand Stand —and the right to erect another were sold by public auction on Tuesday 1 <st, and together fetched the of 1.112 Mr Nevile bid, on behalf of tb * Tapanui I edge of Good Templars, to the amount ot ■64 and JL36 respectively, makin < the publican who got them pay heavily for his riufht. The profits, • think, if any, will be remarkably small. The Jockey <’lub having acted in a very mean way towards the God Templars, they have taken up a p sition of defiance, but as I do not approve of stating cases before they come to proper light, I shall leave it at present, as I have no doubt it will be eventually settled before a Court of Justice.
