CANTERBURY.
[Bt Telegraph.]
(From our own Correspondent.) , Christchurch, January 21. The Christchurch team will not be finally settled till Saturday night at eight o’clock, but the following may bd considered certain players :
Corfe, who will probably be captain, is a good all round man. His weakest point is fielding. He is a really fine bat if once set, but I think nervous ou first going tp the wicket: He gets runs fast if he gets over the first tew overs and plays the game. Is a fair but is not m great form in this department this year.
B. Fowler is a good bat and keeps wicket. He also bowls, but not with any great success this year.
A OUivier has very stubborn defence as a bat, and u rather cramped in his play, but hits with a vengeance sometimes. He is a first rate field anywhere, and is more especially good beiund the wickets. He will probably long stop, if Sweet bowls. Is a certain catch, and has a good return to the wicket keeper. Fuller is in rare bowling form this year, and can go on all day. He bowls fast, with a good deal of break, is afair field, and sometimes gets runs quickly, but is uncertain an a bat.
Sweet bowls at a great pace, but is very often not on the wicket, ana is apt to over-ljowl himself, but sometimes, on a lively wicket is dangerous; He is a splendid field at leg and cover point, and an excellent bat if he will keep steady, having great hitting powers. - ' Moore, T.R., is a good bowler on his day but is not in good batting form this year, being rather out of practice. Is a good field if be likes.
Stevens, E. J. C., is a fair but nervous bat* and has improved wonderfully in fielding ‘ Neilson is a good fiolS, a fair change bowler and bats with plenty of nerve, but has nob much power.
The remainder of the team will be selected fr/.m the following, the most likely ones being placed first
Fowler is a first-rate field, a left-handed bat and gets runs sometimes. ■ ’
G. Lee, a good all-round man. but out of practice, nught certainly to be in the eleven Wood is a stubborn bat and fair field. a go and a dangerous hitter ■with the bat.
The last three are Biker, Sonter, and Demden, of whom the onsy likely player is Baker, whdis a fair field, and bats with gpod defence, hitting freely at times, Alto, get her ourg is a strong team and the men ari pract s ng a great deal at The
