CITY COUNCIL.

There was a full meeting of the Council last night, when a good deal of business was transacted, the principal being the following :

In connection with the waterworks : It was resolved to employ an accountant to adjust all accounts between the Corporation and the Company ; to make no concession to the Turkish Baths Company for tbe water supplied to them ; to refer to the Water Committee the Harbor Board’s application that supply pipes might be laid on to the outer ends of Stuart and Jetty street jetties, and the Acclimatisation Society’s request that the Corporation would continue tpe compan ’s arrangement by whi ;h the Society received the fees for perch-fishing in the reservoir; unanimouslyto decline the pp icatiuu of the Dunedin School Committee tuat the schools should be exempted from payment of water rates The committee recommended that Mr Dick should furnish a guarantee bond for LSOO, and the two water-rate collectors bonds for Ll5O each, the Corporation paying the premiums thereon ; that Mr Dick be in structed to continue the usual practice as to the supply of water to hydraulic lifts, that Mr Dick be temporarily authorised to conduct correspondence in connection with the ordinary water supply business ; that there should be separate water accounts; and that all blacksmiths and owners of forges be informed that after April 1 water will be supplied by meter at one shilling per thousand gallons. In connection with the Manure Depot nuisance, Messrs Cook and Muir, on behalf of Messrs Genever and others, wrote that unless steps were taken for the removal of the nuisance stringent measures would be resorted to against tbe Corporation. The Secretary to the Oaversham Board wrote on tbe same subject. The Secretary of the Harbor Board wrote that the Board had beep informed that the Corporation intended leasing certain land adjoining Athol place. It wa? the intention of the Board to reclaim land to which that proposed to be leased gave access, and he asked that steps be taken to reserve access to the laud to be reclaimed, and for 'access to the docks proposed to be constructed. The Government was also concerned in the matter, and he' suggested that the engineers of the Government, Harbor Board, and tbe Corporation should consult together so as to prepare a plan that would suit all parties.—Referred to the Reserves Committee.

The Working Men’s Club’s application for section 30, block XVII., at a nominal rent, as a site for the Club’s building, was referred to the Works Committee.

The Bye-lawa Committee reported, recommending the request of the Registrar, under direction of the General Government, that no interments be allowed in cemeteries under control of the < orpovation without certificates of deaths from the Registrar being produced.

On the question of leasing the Southern Market Reserve being raisfed. 'The Reserves Committee reported, among other things, that the quarrying operations at the. old Botanic Cardens bp confined tp tpelinp of street through the hill; that the application, trtmt the Caiedojhw Society be allowed to re-

move the galvanised iron fence, be declined; that an ornamental cast iron fence be placea round the Octagon ; that the rent of land tor the Sailors’ Home beLS per month. The clause re the Caledonian Society’s fence was opposed by Or. Fish, who thought the society’s demand moderate, and that it would be worth while to give them the fence to get them away. Eventually it was*agreed to allow the society to'remove the present fence; on condition of paying , half of a new picket fence, to be approved 1 by the Surveyor and the Works Committee. The clause vi a fence round the Octagon was struck out. The Sanitary Committee reported having had an interview with their Health Officer (Dr Cole), who presented a preliminary report on the sanitary condition of the City, which the committee considered a very valuable one, and recommended that the Inspector of Nuisances should be instructed to supply the Health Officer with such information _as he might require, and give all necessary assistance for the purpose of obtaining more minute information relative to sanitary matters and house inspecting; that the Provincial Government be requested to furnish the Health Office! with weekly returns showing tbe deaths in the Hospital, causes of death, what diseases admitted, patients discharged, and any other similar information required ; and that in future all new buildings be provided with brick cesspools cemented and watertight. It was decided to print the Medical Officer’s report when completed, and the clause re cesspools, was struck out, the subject being referred to the new Act Committee.

At a special meeting prior to the above it was rewived to borrow the sum of L 50,000 for the purposes of widening Princes street, sewerage, reducing bank overdraft, new necessary works, and paying contracts already in existence. The question as to whether debentures for the whole amount be issued at once, was left to the Finance Committee.
