THE PRESBYTERIAN SYNOD.

Wednesday, January 20 The Synod met this morning at 11 o’clock. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC.

The Rev. Mr Gillies brought up the follow* ing overture from the Dunedin Presbytery j - “ Whereas the use of instrumental music is an aid to praise in the worship of God, is scriptural, and has been sanctioned in most Presbyterian Churches of the world, and wheieas throughout our Church there is on the part of many members a desire that the liberty to use this aid be given to such congregations as may unanimously desire it, it is hereby overtured by the undersigned members of the Synod that the Synod would take this whole subject into their serious consideration and devise such measures thereanent as may tend to promote the glory of God and the good of the Church. W. Gillies. W. Will, D. M. Stuart, W. Johnston, J. M. Sutherland, A. B. Todd, J. Copland.—The Rev. Mr Bannebman moved that the overture be not received, remarking that there were no signatures of other than ministers, but the adoption of the overture was carried by 19 votes to 16.

SANCTIONING OP CHARGES. The Rev. Mr Will read the report on the above, which stated that only two applications had come before the committee, and they recommended that that from the Presbytery of Southland be granted; and also that Blueskin and Merton be sahctioned as a ministerial charge. The report was adopted. • ■

THE DEATH OP PROFESSOR PAIRBAIRN, ThoßeV. Mr’CLARKE brought forward a motion expressive of the sympathy df'the Synbd with the Free Church of Scotland on the d'e* cease of Professor Fairbairn, • The motion was carried, and it was resolved to forward & cbpy to the College committee of the Free Church and to the family of thfe lamented gentleman. 7 TRAVELLING EXPENSES. The Rev. Mr Ross (Queenstown) brought up the report of the above, as follows That members living fifty miles or more out of Dunedin should be entitled to allowance for travelling expenses ; that no more than LlO be allowed to any member; that this should be regarded as part of the Synodical expenses: and that the fund should be raised by special collection. Referred back to committee. THE CLERK’S SALARY.

Mr J ohn Duncan moved that the remuneration of the Clerk to the Synod (the llev. Mr Baunerman) be increased to LSO a year, speaking in high terms of the services rendered bv that gentleman. J

Dr Copeland seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. [Left sitting.!
