Tuesday, January 13. (Before J. Bathgate, Esq., R.M.)

Wholesale Theft. The adjourned charge against Mary Fleming of stealing a quantity of drapery from the shop of Messrs Herbert, Haynes and Co., Princes street, was continued after wq went'to press jast evening, and respired in the committal of the accused for tpial, bail being allowed in her own recognisance of L2OO and one surety of LIOO. —His - v orship allowed one surety be. cause accused was possessed of considerable property. Indecent Assault.— John Hartley was charged, on remand, with attempt to commit a rape on Anne Hi verson, a married woman, at Look-out Point on the ■ 17th ult. Mr Mouafc (instructed by Mr Stout) defended.— Prisoner was committed for trial. (On the p evious hearing the case was heard with closed doors, but yesterday it was heard in open court).

Drunkenness —John Kennedy was fined IQs, with the option of twenty-four hours’ imprisonment; George Ijaviej) 20a, or forty* eight hour*’. - KGLECTED Children. —Two little girls named Elizabeth and .Alice Syndernombe were sent to the Industrial School for one year as neglected children, the father b dog in gaol and the mother having left them. CIVIL CASES. Several undefended civil cases were heard, and judgment given by default in each, with costs. Clark v. Lewis.—Claim L 7 17s for wages due. ■ Mr E. Cook appeared for defendant.— Judgment was given for L 4 and costs. Martin v. Bird.—This was an action for the recovery of articles of wearing apparel left with defendant. Mr E. Cook appeared for defendant, and pleaded bankruptcy on thp part of plaintiff, which prevented him from suing, and non-indebtedness. —His Worship decided to adjourn the case for a week foi the production of the Provisional Trustee (Mr Leary).
