PALMERSTON RACES,

We take from the ‘ Waikouaiti Herald ’ particulars of the principal events at the above meeting on the Ist inst. The attendance was large :

Palmerston Handicap, of 50 so vs. Distance, two miles.

Mr A. M'Kay’s b g Unknown, 6 yrs, 9st 21b (Owner) 1 Mr J. Cotton’s br m Envy, aged, Bst 71b (J. Cotton) 2 Oapt. Hutchison’s br gEarl of Lynne, 4 yrs, Bst 51b (Batty) 3 After an excellent start. Faugty-a-Rallagh’fi colors were the first to show in frqnt, wjth Unknown second, Earl of Lynne third, and Envy fourth. On entering the straight run home the first time, Faugh-a-Ballagh bolted at the turn, leaving the race to the three others. Unknown now took up the leading position, which he maintained to the finish, after an unsuccessful attempt to change places on the part of Envy’s jock. The result of this race was a surprise to many, as Envy was the favorite, while some fancied the Earl of Lynne, It was the opinion of some that if Faugh-a-Ballagh had not bolted he would have given the winner a tussle for it. Distbict Handicap, of 25 Sovs. Distance, one and a-half miles. Mr R. Nelmes’s b hj Faugh-a-Ballagh, 4 yrs, 9st (M'Gregor) 1 Mr J. Lyttle’s ch g Celoeno, 5 yrs, Bst 121b (M‘Glashan) 2 S. Idle Girl and Nora also started. This was a capital race, Celoeno was a hot favorite, while Faugh-n-Ballagh had many friends and backers. The Ipnses got well away together. Nora being slightly in the rear. Almost from -the start the colt took up the lead, with Celosno in close pursuit, «nd Jdlp Girl following in dangerous proximity. On passing the Judge’s stand the first timo round the position of the b>rses had not altered, and with slight variation they raced into the straight, the colt if anything having the advantage, which ho Increased as he neared the winning post. It was asserted that Celoeno had something amiss with him or he would have won the race. . Shag Valley Cup of 40 sovs. Distance, one and a-half miles. Weight for age. Captain Hutchison’s br m Spritsail, 4 yrs, Bst l)lb ... ... (Batty) 1 Captain Hutchison’s br g Earl of Lynne, 4 ’ yrs, Bst 111b (M'Glashan) 2 " King Philip, Ringleader, and Celoeno were scratched. Captain Hutchison declared to win with Spritsail. To the great disappointment of many this race was neither more nor less than a walk-over. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 25 sovs. Distance, one mile. Heats. Over hve flights of hurdles about 3ft Gin. Mr W. Affleck’s oh m Miss Tatton, aged, lOst 51b ... (W. M‘Kay) 2 11 Mr T. M‘Kay’s b g Bushman, aged, list 71b (Owner) 14 2 Mr W. This was the most exciting race of the day, and one of the moat phjckily contested. Bashjnan won the first neat after a good strp&glo with Miss Tatton by a pouple of lengths. "In the second the contest was between Bushman and Miss Tatton, but at the last hurdle Bushman, who was hard pushed by Miss Tatton, came to grief—his forefeet| striking the hurdle ho fell heavily to the ground, partly rolling over .his jockey, who most miraculously

escaped serious injury. The final heat was a splendid contest between Miss Tatton and Bush* man. Both herses took their leaps together in capital style, Bushman having for the first half mile slightly the advantage; the powers of endurance Of the mare, however, appeared to be her jockey, and in leaping thd last hurdle she was about a length ahead of Busmtian, who, although he ran pluclcily, never recovered the lost ground. of 20 so vs., was won by Mr E. Walsh s Idle Girl (afterwards protested against on the grounds that she had won public money), and the Consolation, of 15 sovs., by Captain Hutchison’s Earl of Lynne.
