CITY COUNCIL.

The special meeting of the City Council last night was attended by the Mayor and all the Councillors except Cr. Reeves,

Before the special business was proceeded with, Cr. Isaac called attention to what he characterised as a “ scandalous occurrence.” He alleged that Mr Paul, secretary to the Sailors’ Home, had forcibly ejected from the Immigration Barracks several homeless women and children -a most improper proceeding.—Cr. Fish considered the virtuous indignation of Cr. Isaac unnecessary. The barracks were secured as a temporary Sailors’ Home, and Mr Paul, instead of being guilty of inhumanity or disreputable conduct, had simply turned out some worthless creatures, who had made no endeavor to got a household of their own, and were simply keeping in the barracks as long as they possibly could. The subject' then dropped. The Council went into committee on the Princes street widening question, and afterwards adopted the following resolutions: — “ That the Council agrees to the general principles contained in Messrs Sievwright and Stout’s grants, and instructs the Corporation solicitor to insert, in addition, a power whereby the awards of the arbitrators shall, where practicable, be made known to the persons concerned simultaneously upon the deed of signing the laud to the Corporation being executed.” “ That a clause be inserted in the bond leaving it optional to the Council to pay the award in instalments—one-third on the execution of the deed, and the other two payments at three andsix six months, the usual bank inter being allowed.” “ That three months be allowed arbitrators for making awards, and that the Reserves Committee have power to determine the time within which the Council shall be bound to have the work of widening the street carried into effect.”
