THE OPERA.
The opera of “ Cinderella ” was repeated last evening with the same oust as before, and went exceedingly well. Miss May sang charmingly, and was well seconded by Mr Hallam and the other members of the troupe. As an introduced piece Miss May treated the audience with “ ’Twas within a Mile of Edinbro’ Toun,” and being encored, she gave “Katy’s Letter” in her usual arch and bewitching style. Beautifully as both were rendered, we M issed “She wore a Wreath of Roses,” which we never heard given with such pathos and effect as by Miss May, We were glad to see a marked improvement in the pantomime, although wo do not think that line of business suits the genius of the company. Yet our young people would sadly miss their Christmas drollery were it omitted, and as the pantomime was placed before the audience last evening, it fully equals many that .we have seen improvised in Dunedin by untrained pantomimists. The tricks were on the whole successful, the dancing was very good, and the scenery magnificent, while that which was objectionable in the first performance has been carefully excluded. Last night the most fastidious stickler for propriety could not have been offended, and the youngsters present thoroughly enjoyed the funny planks of clown and pantaloon. To-night there is to be a change. “ Blue Beard,” one of Offenbach’s comic productions, will be played. It was thoroughly en joyed on its first introduction when the Opera Company were last here, and judging by what we have seen of the marked improvement in style of all the members of the troupe, we anticipate a rich treat and a crowded house. It is announced for this night -only. Mr Raphael, the manager, has published an * Kntr-’Acte;’ which contains well-selected reading matter, and is distributed gratis.
