DEPUTATIONS.
Two deputations, of which we had no notice, waited upon the Commissioner of Customs yesterday. In answer to the Sailors’ Home Comniff tee, MT Reynolds said, there could be no objection to the Government Shipping Office being connected with the Home; and in reply to a deputation from the Licensed Victuallers’ Association, that he clid not think the Provincial Licensing Ordinance was in conflict with the Licensing Acts of the Assembly. He would, however, take the opinion of the AttorneyGeneral on the point. Messrs J5. B. Cargill, M'Neil, Low, Brodnck, and Webb, as representing the Chamber of Commerce, waited on the Commissioner of Customs to-day with a view of seeing what arrangement could be come to by which the Chamber could be regularly supplied with telegrams announcing the arrival and departure of coastal and mail steamers. Mr Reynolds said that the present system might be carried out—that of announcing the arrival or departure of a vessel to the nearest port; but the deputation said they wished that all information respecting the arrival and departures of steamers throughout the Colony be sup) died, to which Mr Reynolds replied that to do so would involve a large amount of expense, and also a great deal of trouble to the Customs authorities and telegraph people, who couW not be expected to stand on the jetty late at night awaiting the departure of a vessel No definite arrangement was arrived at, the deputation deciding to send in an application to the Government, Mr Reynolds saying lie was unable to give particulars as to the cost which the system desired would involves
