SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
A- shocking accident occurred in Princes sti eet at about a quarter to two this afternoon, by which two men sustained serious injuries. A horse drawing a spring cart belonging to Mr grocer, of George street, bolted when opposite Messrs Brown, Ewing, and Co.’s shop and Hung out the driver, breaking some of his ribs, dislocating one shoulder, and causing some severe cuts about the head. As the horse galloped furiously down the street, a man named Hartley ran along the pavement with the idea of catching it, but the cart wheel caught the lamp post opposite Mr Macarthur's. jeweller, breaking it short off, and this fell on Hartley s leg, breaking it in two jdaces, both, we believe, below the knee. The horse continued its career past the Custom House, hut was then caught by Constable Devine. In the meantime the driver had been taken into Mr Isaac s chemist’s shop, where he was attended to by Dr Brown, who, on finding the extent of the injuries sustained, caused him to be re *9 the Hospital. Hartly was taken into Air Jacobs s shop, and was then als'o taken to the Hospital. The cart suffered considerable damage, the shafts being brokeh,
A later report states that the driver of the cart was not injured, he not being in it at the time, but that the first man hurt was a person who tried to stop the runaway horse.
