FIRE AT KENSINGTON.

Shortly after one o’clock this afternoon a fire broke out in one of the newly-erected innni grants’ cottages near the railway crossing on the Anderson’s Bay road. The cottage °is a double one, divided by a brick wall, but only the one half, occupied by one Mossery, was destroyed. The fire originated from a wooden barrel at the end o£ the house, in which are kept live ashes. The strong wind prevailin'* blew several of these ashes against the house and set fire to it. A little girl, eight years old who was in bed, was the only person in the house, and she did not wake till the flames were around her, and it was with difficulty that she was saved by being carried through the window. As it was her hair was considerably singed. The father was at work, and the mother had gone With his dinner, leavin'* the daughter in the house as stated. W e 'have been unable to ascertain the amount of Mossery’s loss, but everything in the house was destroyed. Warren, who occupies the other half of the cottage, lost his carpentering tools which were worth about LlO or Ll2. He only arrived here in the Sussex six months ago, and by the fire at Guthrie’s timber yards lost the tools he was then possessed of. Considerin'* the strong southerly wind which was blowing' it was a wonder that the whole block was not destroyed. The brigade, under Captain Wain and the police, under Sub-Inspector Millard’ were promptly on the spot. Before the arrival of the brigade several residents worked hard to extinguish the fire.
