RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Friday, December 18. (Before J. Bathgate, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness. —John Packer was fined 2CD, wuh the alternative of six days’ imprisonment ; Mary Anne M‘Donald, in answer to her seventeenth offence, said she only came out of trouble yesterday morning after “ doing ” six weeks, and it being wet, and as she was weary after travelling three miles, she was forced to take shelter in a public-house.—-She was fined 40s, or six days' imprisonment.—Defendant : “It is enough to make a woman commit suicide never out of gaol! never out of gaol !”—On a further pbarge of habitual drunkenness she was sent to gaol for three months. Maintenance. —William Meldram was charged by his wife with refusing to obey an order of the Court binding him to pay Ids per week towards the support of his child.— Defendant expressing his wil inguess to pay up arrears, the case was adjourned to enable him to do so. CIVIL CASES Anne Schaefer v. Wanly Evans. —Claim LlO 10s, being ten weeks’ board and lodging —Mr Bathgate appeared for plaintiff, lor whom judgment was given, with costs. Bell v. Shag Valley Quartz Mining Company (Limited). Mr Baih_ate appeared for plaintiff— This was an adjourned case, the claim being for L9B KJs, and s wheu it was last brought before the Court defendants placed an injunction from the Supreme Court restraining proceedings. This plaintiff had got set aside ; but defendants, who had been served with a notice to that effect, did not appear,—Judgment was accordingly given for plaintiff, with costs. John stamper v, E. V. Godso and J Cotton. Claim L 7, for professional services rendered.—Mr Stamper, jun., appeared for plaintiff.—The claim was a joint one, being for s rvioes rendered in connection with the transfer of tiie Peacock Hotel. Cotton admitted owing half the amount, but Godso objected to paying anything, sa he was sued personally, whereas he should have been sued as agent or attorney for his wife. His Worship gave judgment for plaintiff, with costs. Same v. E. V. Godso.—This was also a claim for professional services, and after defendant and plaintiff had been in the wit-ness-box for an hour without anything being elicited, his Worship adjourned the case till Monday.
