CITY COUNCIL.

The Mayor and all the Councillors except Mr Barron were present at the usual fortnightly meeting last right, at which the following business was transacted ; THE TURKISH BATHS. In reference to the application of the Turkish Baths Company for assistance in the way of giving a supply of waL-r (it being intimated that the price for an ordinary bath would be 6d, and 3s ior a Turkish bath), t'r. Fish urged that the charge should be made as low as possible, while Crs. Mercer and Walter opposed any concession. Ultimately the letter was referred to the Works Committee. THE TOWER WATCHMAN. G. Isaac’s notion in regard to compensation were adopted no important works could be undertaken by the Council; and if the amendment were carried, the best street in Dunedin would be spoiled. Ihe amendment of Cr. Woodland, that the pr. levels should be adhered to, was carried; Cr, Prosser’s voice being the only one in the negative. PURCHASE OF the WATERWORKS. The Mayor informed the Council that satisfactory arrangements had been made with the Bank of New Zealand, whereby that institution had agreed to furnish the necessary funds to purchase the Du edin Waterworks before the Ist of January next. dr bakewell’s letter. A letter was read from Dr Bakewel!,’ expressing his dissatis action at the salary voted by the Council for the proposed Health Officer, and requesting that a certain communication furnished by him should be returned. A proposal to return the letter was stoutly opposed by Cra. Pish, HeiVes, and saac, and negatived by six against five. POWDER MAGAZINE AT NORTH DUNE UN. 1 he Works Committee’s recommendation—that Major Atkinson’s application for permission to erect a powder magazine near the North Dunedin Drill-shed should be declined—was adopted.

TOWN CLERK’S ASSISTANT. The paragraph in the report of the Finance Committee, r 'commending that the salary of Air Creagh should be increased to L 209 irom the Ist of December, was referred back for re-consideration.

THE BUILDING REGULATIONS. In answer to Cr. Woodland’s interroga tion—“ It permission has been given for the erection of a building of woo l near the First Church ? if so, by whom ?—the same i eiag m the ‘in er area,’ and Messrs Park and Curie and other applicants having been refused the same privilege”—the Mayor replied that being a special case, the City Surveyor and he had given permission. ADJOURNMENT. The Council adjourned till this evening, to discuss Cr. Waiter’s motion re purchase of the Gas Works.
