Auckland, November 25. The Ferndale has -sailed for London with a cargo valued at L 20.411, including 17,3781bu of wool, Wellington, November 25. Commenting upon the statistics for 1873 just issued, the ‘New Zealand Times’ points out that the Government paid passages, wholly or in part, of 8,754 immigrants without Colonial experience, 1,609 of whom were children, during 1873 ; but that for the same period 4,761 per® sons, a larger proportion being experienced Colonists, left the Colony. It attributes this result partly to bad land and mining laws. It . is estimated that the European population on December 31,1873, was 295,946. The mquny into alleged cruelty on the part of the captain of the Bebington to an immigrant girl has been concluded, but the result has yet not been made public. A civil action for damages will probably be brought by the girl, and the captain is also said to be contemplating legal proceedings on his side. The evidence is said to be contradictory. The girl states that she refused to give up a pocketbOok containing memoranda of the incidents on the voyage, and concealed it about her person: that she was seized, tied up, and stripped, when ’the book was taken from her. Four of the Bebington’s sailors have been sent to gaol for a month for refusing ts work. They pleaded guilty, and complained of bad treatment and insufficient food; but these allegations were not proved. All the immigrants ex Bebington have been engaged.
