ARROW.

(From our oion Correspondent.) November IG. The best instance of success in mining we have had for some time, is that of Squires and party, who are working the river bed just below the Sons of Fortune claim, and are realizing a return of about L3O per man weekly, with every prospect of the yield continuing for some time. I visited the claim to-day, and found that the ground now turning out so well is situated under a small landslip, the bed ro?k being but little below the level of the river, and carrying no wash dirt, but the gold could be seen on scraping the reef, which is rather decomposed. On Friday last the party obtamed 16oz. for the clay’s work of three men, and from the general appearance of the extent of the patch it is most probable that the party will nett some hundreds per man. Such instances have unfortunately been very rare for some t'me back here, and in this claim a sahre was offered only three weeks back for L6O. The Sons of Fortune have appointed Mr John A. Miller as working manager, at L 5 per week, and Mr S. N. Brown as legal manager at L 25 per annum, aud 3d per share for transfers. The appointments are both undoubtedly the best that could have been made, and the company cannot but be congratulated upon them. Active operations will now be the order of the day with the company ; and although, from the nature of the work to be done, over twelve months will be probably occupied before any payable ground can be reached, the undertaking is viewed favorably, especially by the miners The Arrow United are now experiencing the full force of the difficulties involved in draining the flat, aud Mr Roskruge, one of the Jpoal directors and manager of the Nugget reef on the Shotover, is down to give the company some assistance with the machinery, Mr Rorkruge states that he has just completed a crushing of about 300 tons from the flogget, which aVeraged 15dwts., a yield

which leaves a handsome profit. He is also taking out about 100 tons for trial from the Hercules n ef, which is on the opposite bank of the Shotover from the Nugget. The progress made by Teaiplarism is simply astonishing, and its introduction here is tbe moat important event which has haoponed f< r many years. The publicans are scare■ ly taking as many shillings as they did pounds a few months back. Much dissatisfaction is expressed by Templars against the authorities of the Order in Dunehia v.ho hava been found neglectful of up-country lodges, yetstill desire to retain their positions, and are consequently jealous of the supremacy of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand South recently instituted at Christchurch, The coming holiday season will most likely be a very gay one, as some turn-outs on a large scale are being organised. Master G. Low is spending a much needed holiday with his parents, who reside here. It is very certain that this promising scholar is undermining his physical strength by the severity of his studies, and is being hurried to an early grave.
