{From our own Correspondent.) November 23, The prevailing high wind, combined with the drought, is causing uneasiness concerning the incoming crop. Eain and sunshine would restore the agriculturist’s equanimity and be beneficial in alia; ing the epidemic that is among the younger Taierians—measles. Our doctor has a top-busy time just now, lam forced to say. The disease is Of a mild form, however, as yet; but there is scarcely a family house without this visi-. tation. ihe plain looks charmingly green, and, from the surrounding heights, wears the appearance of a perfect garden. To those who can spare time a drive this way would prove an agreeable change from the monotony of city life. _ The Messrs Webb are making an extensive alteration in their hotel accommodation. Whether the Good Templars here have anything or not to do in this matter is a question which might require some solving. I presume that a two-storey hotel is more in accordance with the present Licensing Act than formerly. The iron horse is at work dragging ballast, &c., to the amusement of the young folks and to the annoyance of the settlers, the quadruped tribe not appearing to like the snorts and whistling of their assistant. Familiarity breeds contempt, so this will work its own cure. We seldom see any of the new arrivals out here. If the Government has too many of them on hand about Dunedin, they might do worse than erect a small immigrants’ home hereabouts, for in the harvest months there will be a demand for helps. A more suitable spot for such is not to be found in Otago ; both the employer and those desiring employment would be benefited.
Sunday trading is carried on to some extent although supposed to be restricted. Those whose duty it is to see that the law is observed are misnamed or myths.
