FATAL ACCIDENT AT KAITANGATA.
On Friday evening last the s.s. Wallabi was moored in the Molyncux at Kaitangata, c ose to the lower pmu, and within a very 'ew feet of the oink. Her engineer (Mr Morton), v, bo had been spending the evening ishore, was returning ;o her at about a quar* :,iv to twelve o’clock at night, in company with the steward. Whilst crossia <■ the gangvay from the shore to the steamer, be stumbled and fell into the water, clutching i-be steward in his fall, aud dragging him in" Mco. Jhe steamer was not more than fiveee. from the shore, and the steward got out on the river bank without much difficulty, but could find no trace of his companion. Search was made the next day, and, after dragging for some time, the body < f poor vlorton wa? found under the stern of the Waiiabi, about fifteen Let from the place he bad fMleu in. Morton was a young man J not more than thirty, aud leaves a wife and three children to mourn hs loss. He insured his life in the Government office about a mouth ago for 1.400, and had paid but one premium when the accident, by which be was deprived of life, happened,- * Bruce Herald.’
