" The amount of revenue received at the Ous I'H-house or voods cleared for consumption this day was L 274 9« 2d. . The improved demand noticed last week has continued, and business has been decidedly more active than for some time past. The chief feature in the week’s transactions was a sale of sugar, ex Alexandra, by Messrs Whitelaw and Co., on Thursday. The trade mustered strongly, and about 10,000 mats were placed at fair prices. Of finest whites two tons found buyers at L 36 5s and L 36 7s 6d respectively. Several lines of second whites were placed at L 35. Finest yellows realised L 33 ss; second do, L3l 10s, at which price, however, only one lot was sold. Good ration brought L2B 15s, and several lines of brewers’ crystals were purchased at prices varying from L3215s toL34 17s 6d. Dried fruits have been much inquired after, and are very firm at former quotations. Currants, 4Jd per lb, with an upward tendency. Eleme raisins, 6Jfd ; sultanas, 7d; muscatels, Is. Tennant’s ale commands 12s fid. Guinness’s stout, 12s fid. Geneva is offering at 13s fid. Henessey’s brandy, 9s fid for bulk; case, 30s. Best brands of whisky are inquired after, and realise rather better prices. De Roubaix’s candles are to be bought at 10J per lb; Belmont at 10£ d. Hams and bacon are much sought after, and, ai the supply is very limited, prices are advancing. B .con fetches lid per lb and hams Is 2d, at which quotations holders are very firm. Tobacco is still advancing. *A large parcel by the Oneco changed, hands during the week at full prices. Potatoes continue scarce, and cannot be bought under LlO per ton. Messrs Driver,' Stewart, and Co.’s sale this afternoon of the township of Calton, near the Water of Leith, was largely attended, and the bidding was spirited, every section offered*— severity-five in number -being sold. The prices ranged from LlO to L 34.
THE LABOR MARKET.
Mr Skene reports:— Good weather and plenty of’employment have greatly improve i the aspect of the labor market. “There is a steady demand for sensible, smart servant girls; also shepherds, ploughmen, pick and shovel men, and all experienced country hands are wanted; quality is more looked to than wages. Agreements during the week are as under General servants, L 26 to L3S; experienced do, LSO to L 5 2; good female cooks, 25s to 30s; ploughmen and shepherds, from L52t0L70; warned do, L 75 to L9O ; station couples, L9O--in all cases. Road and quarry men, Bs, 9s, and 10s; smart boys and girls, 6s to 10s per week; building trade, 12s to 14s per day ; gardeners and grooms, 25s and 30s per week and found.
