RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Tuesday, September 22. (Before J. Bathgate, Esq,, R.M.) DRUNji^NEss.—Archibald M‘Lean and Agnes A ntoni were discharged with a caution, this being their first offence ; .John Black was fined 20s, or three days’ impr'is' nment; Isabella Lyle, au old offmder, was fined 40s, with the alternative of fourteen days imprisonment, for being drunk in a right-of-way off Walker street. A Disoßpiißpy House. —lsabella Lyle was further charged witja being the occupier of a house frequented by perspus haying no lawful means of support.—Evidence having been given by the police, His Worship adjourned the case for fourteen days, to enable a prisoner named M’Leod to give evidence. Theft.— Mary Harwood was charged with having, on September 17, stolen a quantity of goods, of the value of 13s Sd, from the ebop of Wm. M'Nee,—Prisoner pleaded guilty, but expressed penitence for her misconduct, She had only been in the Colony nine weeks. Worship, addressing hei You have confessed fo taking various articles be'onging to your master, of the value of 13s Bd, and you now say you are very sorry. A young woman of 24shouidhave been able to resist such temptation. You have only been in the Colony nine weeks, and I am very unwilling to send you to gaol, where, perhaps, you may learn more mischief, and be thrown into the company of thieves and prostitutes. You certainly deserve some punishment, but I must take the other circumstauces of the matter into consideration, and I think it is my duty to give you a chance. I will not sentence you to-day, but I will adjourn the case for two months on your own recognisance of L 5, for your appearance here at the expiry of that time, and if during the two months 1 hoar a good account of you from the police, I P)9y deal leniently with you. Now you must learn not to meddle with other people’s property. The case will bo adjourned for two months j in the meantime you will endeavor to regain your character.' [ Left sitting. ]
