HARBOR BOARD.
The following business was transacted after ws went to press yesterday ; Mr Tewsley moved—“ Firstly, that immediate steps be taken to get a correct survey of the harbor made; secondly, thit a new hull be ordered for the pr sent dredgin* m icbinery. according to the designs of the iate Mr Balfour, or such modifications thereof as may render dredge more efficient f>r its work; th r Uy, that such new punts as are necessary to save delay in the working if the dredge be also ordered; and f mrthly, that Messrs M'Neill, Reeves, and Ramsay be a committee to make inquiriis with a view to either purchasing the Peninsula steamer, or ordering a new and perhaps more suitable steamer, for the work of tow* mg the punts, such committee to report at next meeting of the Board.” The motion was carried, Mr M’Kiunon’s name being added to the committee. The Finance Committee" was empowered to communicate with the Executive to endeavor to get it to give such collateral security for an overdraft or a loan as would obviate tho present difficulty, and enable the Board to go on with its work ihere was considerable discussion on Mr M -eils motion—“ That the dredging o' the deep water channel between Dunedin and Port Chalmers be at once proceeded with at the earliest possible date, so that aT InterProvincial and Intercolonial steamers and sailing vesse's may come up to Dunedin without further delay than is necessary.” Mr M Ki non expressed the opinion that 'he Board would not be able to do much in the Upper Harbor until a 1 new dredge was purchased ; while Mr I bwslet understood two or three mouths’ dredging W"uld enable all and latere loni d vessels to to Dunedin, and that the work at Pot (Jhalm ’rs woulc take ten or twe've months. If that was the case, it seemed to him that the work in the Upper Harbor should be proceeded with at once. He would be the list person to tak* the dredge away from Port • halmers if the work could be done within a reasonable time : but, if the work at Port Chalmers would take ten or twelve months, ani the work of the Upper Harbor only two, the latter ought to be fit sk proceeds I with. It was pointed out by Mr Thoms N that the new jetty at the Port would be qure valueless uni si there was sufficient water to enableveasds to get alongside ; but Mr HEEVf.s replied that the same argument would appl, to the Upper Harbor. The fa t was another dre Ige was required—an opinion that was 3'iarel m by Mr Reid. Mr M‘Kinnon urged th.t there was plenty of work for t e dredge to do at Port Chalmers, aud instanced that the Wel'ington recently took the gr uind on going into dock. Mr i.’eid suggested that a new dredge should be telegraphed for. After further discussion the mot ou was carried, aud the Works Com mitlec instru ted to take steps to have a proper survey of the Harbor male.
