IS A HORSE’S BROKEN LEG CURABLE?

To the Editor. Sir,— My attention has been drawn to a local inyourisoue of the 4th inat. j regarding an a,mcle which appeared in the ‘ South Australian Advertiser,’ in which a Mr W. Field, of Woodvilie, writes, “ Why shoot horses with broken legs ? ” and expresses his astonishment that, so far as he has heard, no veterinary surgeon has attempted to set thebroken leg of a horse, but that he (Mr Field) has been partially successful in settmg the leg of a horse, and fully eo the leg of a ram. I beg leave to state that I quit* be.ieve m, bub am not astonished at Mr Field s success m His treatment of broken egs bub I am astonished that hje‘never h.ard that veterinary surgeons sometimes at.erap.ed to sat the broken leg of a horse. For the information of Mr-Field, and the public m general, 1 beg leave to state that veterinary surgeons have sudcessfully dene so in Europe, America, the West Indies, and Austraha. some of the horse*' having’ be4n Under my Own treatment and observation. At the same tune, X beg to state that only

hones with a simple (not compound) fracture of the hind legs, and not above the hooks, are curable, and those fractures below the knees on the forelegs are especially of easy cure. Unless the animal is valuable, the owner in general does not like to go to the trouble and expense of the cure, ynd therefore many horses are destroyed in consequence which the veterinary surgeon would certainly cue.—l am, Ac., S. StraiNGER, _ Veterinary Surgeon. Hope street, Dunedin, Sept. 7.
