CITY COUNCIL.

The adjourned meeting was Ijeld at three o’clock yesterday on ; present—The dayor, Crs. Barron, Beck, Carroll, Fish, Grant, Isaac, Mercer, .Prosser, Reeves, Walter, and Woodland. THE WIDENING OF PRINCES STREET. It was proposed oy Cr. Fish, and sconded by Or. Walikr, “ That, in the opinion of this Council, it is desirable that Princes street south, from Jet y street to Police street, be widened.” This was carried by 7 to 5. Ayes : Crs. Barron, Fish, Is-aac, Mercer, Prosser, Walter, and the Mayor! Noes: Crs. Beck, Carroll, Grant, Reeves, and Woodland. Cr. Fish moved, “That, in order to carry out the foregoing resolution, the Town Clerk be instructed to communicate at once with the whole of the tenants upon the Manse Peserve, asking if they are willing to submit their claims for compensation for loss, as provided for in the draft agreement submitted to this Council, to arbitration, and that the said draft agreement be signed and sealed forthwith ” Carried. Cr. Walter moved, “That the Corporation tenants between the premises of Messrs Hughes and Harvey aud Pohee street be asked if they are -willing to submit their claims to arbitration.” Carried. Cr, Fish moved, “That immediately upon recipt of affiimauve replies to the above, this Council at once appoint arbitrators, as provided by law, and allow the parties interested to do the Same, who together shall appoint an umpire for the purpose of arriving at a valuation, and such valuation shall be binding on the Corporation aud on the tenants.” Carried. Cr. Fish also moved, “That after arbitratora are mutually appointed, and pending the receipt by the Corporation of the award, the City Surveyor prepare plans aud specifications for the street work, in order that tenders may be invited without delay.” Carried. Cr. Barron moved, “That a deputation, consisting of the Reserves Committee, wait upon the Government with the view of getting them to assist the Council, by giving money or labor towards the carryingvqut of the work.” Carried. The Mayor then congratulated the Council on the settlement of the longrpending question. MISCELLANEOUS. A by Cr. Prosser, “ That it is desirable the members of the Fire Brigade should be increased from 38 to 50 ; that the necessary additional plant be obtained for the Brigade ; and that the services rendered by the officers of the Brigade bo acknowledged by this C uucil,” was referred to the Finance Committee, A report from P/ofessor Black, on the quality of the gas, was read, and a vote of thanks passed to that gentleman. a motion by Cr. Walter, “ That a clause be inserted in the proposed new viunicipal Act, repealing the 220 d clause of the Otago fv unioipal Corporations Ordinance, 1805, the effect oi which will be to prevent pffiraliiy

of voting at future Mayoral elections.” was referred to the New Municipal Act Committee.

A motion by Gr. Waltkr, “That Mr Hankcy’s attorn sy in Dunedin be written to, requesting him to state if he is prepared to extend the contract now existing with the Corporation for public and private lighting,” was referred to the Lighting Committee. Cr. Fish moved, ‘ That the Town Clerk be instructed to lay on the tab e of the Council, for the inspection of Councillors and the Pn-ss, copies of all reports of committees intended for preseutatim to the Council, on the day previous to the meeting of Council.” It was decided that it would not be advisable to give the Press access to the reports prior to their being considered by the Council, as some of the clauses of reports were often referred back to committees for further consideration. It was decided, therefore, that the words, “and the Press.” should be struck out ; but, also on Cr. Fish’s motion, it was agreed that, for the future, an Order Paper, containing the business to be brought before the Council at any meeting, be printed and sent to each Councillor and the Press, with the usual notice of meeting. The following motions by Cr. Fish were referred to the Finance Committee ; —(1.) “ That the Town Clerk be instructed to prepare and furnish to each Councillor, before *he next meeting of Council, a statement of the exact revenue and fixed expenditure for the current year, and showing the amount (if any) available either for new works out of revenue or to pay interest and sinking fund upon a new loan ; such return to be o.imprebensive, and to show in detail, as far as p ssil'le, how the various amounts are ar rived at.” (2.) “That, in the opi don of this Council, the time has arrived when it is absolutely necessary that an as istaut, capable of perfo’mvng the bulk of the routine work now performed by the Town Clerk, be appointed.” Motions by Cr. Prosskr to the following effect:—“ That a footpath be made at the top of Stafford streetand “ That the metal on the footpaths in South Princes street be blinded with siftings or fine gravel ” —were referred to the Works Committee, The tender of Mr Campbell, 1.239, for additions to the Pelichet Bay Baths, was accented.
