WASTE LAND BOARD.
The usual weekly meeting of this Board was held to-day ; present—The Chief Commissioner (in the chair), Messrs Butterworlh, Strode, aud Bastings. Mr Kossbotham’s appeal against the decision of the Chief Commissioner, refusing to declare him the purchaser of sections 3, 4, 5 8, 9. 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19. 20, 21, and 22, block 1, Beaumont, was adjourned for a week. Mr Connell, for Richard Lancaster, appeared to oppose the letter of the District L.and Officer on the subject of Lancaster’s application. The matter was ’adjourned till next meeting. Several applications for land on goldfields were considered and the following approved of: —G, Kerr, section 10, block 6, Waifca huna East; T. Grunty, section 17, block 6, VVaitahuna West; J. Docherty, sections 12 and 28, block 6, Tuapeki East; Peter M‘lntyre, sections 16 and 17, block 6, Waitahuna East. The application of Duncan M*Rae to purchase section 10, block 5, Tuapeka east, after being reconsidered, was approved of. The following applications to purchase lands held under agricultural leases were approved of i». J. Alpine, section 98, block 2, Tuapeka East; John Buternent, section 2. Earnslaw; W. S. Trotter, section 4, Kingston District. The following applieations to exchange leases under clause 62, were also approved of : —Kobert Clement, section 2, block 17, and section 97, block 5, Shotover ; J, Ryan, section 8, block 5, Waitabuna East. Mr D. Macfarlane, Hokitika, as representative of a company, asked what encouragement would be given in the shape of grants of timbered land on the West Coast, should he establish a saw-mill in one of the Sounds there. . The Board forwarded the timber regulations. The application of A. Cassells for run 450, 3,000 acres on the coast west - of the Waiau, was referred for advice to the Chief Surveyor. The application of Fletcher and M'Gillivray for a license under clause 161 to occupy an island in Wyndham Village Reserve was read, and the Board decided that applicant must state his object. A letter from John Gamble, relative to application to purchase sections 20, 25, 3, 27, and 12, block 1, Crookston ; and to Mr Lancaster s application for the bush at M'Cana’s Beach, was read. Memoranda from the Provincial Solicitor relative to the costs in O’Kane’s case— Moke Creek copper mining lease—referring to ex parte statements regarding the manner in which a Government officer or Provincial Solicitor conducts his business being made through the columns of a newspaper; and to a statement which he thinks impliedly accuses him of being the cause of the delay in the preparation of exchange leases, were read. After a short discussion, the following was minuted :—"‘That there was not the slightest intention on the part of the B<jard to attribute any blame to Mr stout as Provincial Solicitor in the matters referred to.” The application of Righard Howprth for a lease of the village reserve, Halfway Bay, was refused. The request of H. M. Henderson that two back sections adjoining those he had purchased in Dunkeld should be put up for sale, with valuation for improvements made by him, was also refused. A memo, from the Government intimating that the Tuapeka Hundred would be proclaimed on the 2nd September, and arrangement would be made for opening it for sale as soon thereafter as possible, was read. J he application of Ed. Caspar, for permission to form a tramway to the two-mile bush, Lake Wakatip, was referred to the danger. The District Waste Land Officer transmitted questions by Mr H. .-quires as to the power of .he bolder of exchange leases to at sign them. The applicant was referred t» Jiip owg solicitor.
Mr Monat’s application on behalf of T, E. Pope, to purchase section 45, block 19, Tuapeka East, wa 1 refund. The report of ivaugei ilughan, on the ap* plication of Begg, Shedden, and Co., for a sawmill lease of part of block 2, South Molyneux, was received, and the application withdrawn. The report of Ranger Hughan, on the application of Mr Young, for a license to occupy part of block 1, Warepa, under clause 169, was received. Application to be approved of if the Government, approve of conditions. The report of Ranger Hughan, ou the application of John Forsyth, for a license under clause 169, to occupy part of block 5, Glenoamaru, was considered, and the application refused. The following applications to purchase land on Goldfields were approved of : - Geo. Matheson, section 39, block 18, Tuapeka Wait; T. M. Darton, section 102, block 1, do » H. Galbraith, section 13, block 6, do. Applications to purchase laud held under agricultural leases were approved of as follows ;—J. Bryant, section 1, block 9, and section 10, block 10, Tuapeka East; J. Paskel, section 26, block 46, Tokomairiro. Applications to exchange leases were approved of as under: - J. Bosuston, sections 30 and 34, block 10, Waitahuna East; N. Bruce, sections 38 and 39, block 5, do; P. Duffy, section 68, block 6, Tuap-ka East; M. Ryan, section 4, block S, Waitahuna East. Driver, Stewart, and Co. ’a application, for Begg, Shedden, and Co., to purchase sections 4 and 5, block 2, South Molyneux, was referred to the Ranger for his report. Sawmill application to be reinstated. A petition in favor of a new coal lease being granted at Clyde was read. Mr Gillies, for Mr Marie, opposed, and asked that tbe case be adjourned till ho could hear from Mr Marie in reply. An application by Sorton and M‘Master, who were represented by Mr Gillies, to pur chase an island in the Waitaki, was considered and granted, if within the Province.
