m. ~. . AtTCKLANp, August 15. ihe following news from Fiji wot brought by the Cyphrenes Dido has returned to Lenika from Wallis Island. She reports that the vessel ashore there is the French warship L.P Hermit, 1,200 tons, with a cotaplemeut of 150 rpep. The vessel went ashore on tne reef while entering under steam. The crew were landed safely except two, who were drowned. The German barque San Francisco was secured to take the crew to New Caledonia. Her captain demanded 200,000 francs, but ultimately agreed to leave the price to the owner ?r S v ®®sel. When communicated with, H.M.S. Challenger proceeded to Kandavau with Consul Layard, to survey the harbor. Ho then goes on to other parts of the Fiji group A surveying steamer called the Waitara was launched to-day to the order of Webster Brothers, New Plymouth. The following is a special Sydney telegram, sent to "Wellington only : Sydney, August 11, Serious complications have arisen respecting the Californian Mail Service, Mr Hall having left for America per the Mikado. The Tartar is ordered hence to China on her arrival, and the owners of the Cyphrones have sent instructions here for her commander. The A.S.N. Company will not charter the steamer for a single trip unless they have the balance of the temporary contract. Under these circumstances the Government will be compelled to take the matter into its own hands, and it intends to carry on the line despite present prospects. Madame Goddard is playing at Bathurst. She proceeds thence to Dunedin, via Melbourne.
