THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

DUNEDIN.

Owing to the lateness of the hour at which the poll was declared ou Saturday evening, the result appeared in only part of our issue of that day. Messrs Burt, Woodland, and Gibson, who retired by rotation, offered themselves for re-election for their respective wards, so that two Councillors had to be elected for each ward, owing to the increased representation. The election was, perhaps, the quietest of its kind that has taken place for many years, owing to the various candidates having decided to dispense, as much as convenient, with the usual placarded vehicles and “touts,” and leave the whole matter in the hands of the citizens. But very little excitement was manifested till shortly before four o’clock ; but, from the hour of closing the poll till the declaration was made by the Town Clerk, the interest considerably ripened. The various polling-booths, however, during the course of the day indicated that something possessing more than average importance was going on. Two auditors were to be elected for the who'e City. The following is the state of the poll:

It will thus be seen that Mr Burt was the only one of the old Councillors who was thrown out, Mr Isaac taking his place. Mr M'Culloch was returned as one of the auditors, in place of |Mr Fv H, Evans. ' Mr Isaac, being so advised by his solicitor, did not vote, or he would have been at the head of the poll. ihe various candidates briefly addressed the large crowd that had assembled, and the proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to the Mayor.
