THE IMMIGRANTS.
The arrival of two more Home ships—the Peter Dcmiy and the Mairi Bhan—both with immigrants, has put the authorities in a rather unexpected dilemma as to how to accommodvte their passengers, seeing that the barracks are already comfortably s filled. The Mairi Bhan, which left Glasgow on May 7, brings 463 souls ; and the Peter Denny, from London {May 2), 363 souls—making close on 2,000 immigrants landed at Port Chalmers in eight days. It being found to be very expensive to accommodate them on board ship, and as the barracks will not conveniently hold any more, the majority of tfcoso from these two vessels will be temporarily quartered in town—the drill-shed, amongst other places, being brought into use ; while a number will be sent to Riverton, Oamaru, Tokomairiro, and any other place where accommodation can be found. The following is a list of the trades and occupations of those on board the Peter Denny :—Parra laborers, 18 ; general do, 42 ; gardeners, 5; navvies, 7 ; butcher, 1 ; carman, 1; carter, 1; groom, 1; carpenters, 17; do (rough), 1 ; wheelwrights, 1 ; blacksmiths, 7 ; engineer, 1 ; ironworker, 1 ; moulder, I ; plumber, 1 ; bricklayers, 11 ; plasterers, 2 ; bootmakers, 3 ; hamecsmaker, 1 ; baker, 1 ; butler, 1 ; grocer, I; painters, 3 ; platelayers, 3 ; printer, 1 ; railway porter, 1 ; schoolmaster, 1; seaman, 1 • stoker, 1; tailor, I—l3B. Single women— Cook, 1 ; dairymaids, 2 ; dressmaker, 1 ; general servants, 19 ; housemaids, 5 ; laundress, 1 ; needlewoman, 1 • nurse, 1—33. Total labor, 171. Summary—land, 96 males, 21 females ; Scotland, 7 males, 2 females ; Ireland, 27 males’ 9 females ; Wales, 1 male ; Channel Islands, 3 malts ; Germany, 2 males ; West Indies, 2 males, 1 female. On the Mairi £hau there are 463 souls, of which number 250 are males, and 213 females. There are 70 single women, and 87 single men. They are classed as follows : English, 11 males, 13 females ; Scotch, 206 males, 180 females; Irish, 33 males, 34 females. There are about 100 children on board.
