According to “ Iron,” the usual tests of musical ring, milled edge, or even weight, are no longer reliable as tests of a platinum alloj token. It is produced so exactly resem ling gold as to deceive the most experienced business men ; so close is the imitation that specimens submitted to the Pank of England, and put through the ordinary tests, were admitted to be perfect in form and weight. The International Congress has not been a success. The Governments of England, France, and Austria raised objections. Alderman Proctor, of Bristol, has given his mansion, valued at L 20.000, at Clifton, as a mansion-house for future Mayors of Bristol. hlr Lionel Levy, proprietor of the Globe Theatre/ London, presented the Duke of Edinburgh as a wedding gift with a dessert service of solid gold valued at 4,000 guineas. The effect of the new Government measure will be a great impetus to the Clyde sugar refining trade. The Greenock factories resumed work after a six months’ stoppage: over a dozen houses commenced one moining. 30,000 men thrown out of work obtained employment. Captain Blethen, late of the Nebraska, is dangerously ill at San Francisco. Mr Fechter follows Sothern to the Colonies ; also, Walter Montgomery’s wife. The reel op which the Tartar struck is said to ‘have been touched by the Nebraska and Macgregor.

The eldest son of Mr Keesing, of Auckland, has died at San Francisco, leaving a'large fortune. Mr Shaw, newspaper proprietor, formerly of Dunedin, has patented in San Francisco an improved type, which with ease allows type to be drawn out without injury to the matter in correction. -
