DUSKY SOUND.

The recent visit, through stress of weather, of the s.s, Otago to Dusky Hound, has resulted in the expression ot a very favorable opinion given by Captain M‘Lean as to the prospects of Messrs U arding and Co ’a fishcuring settlement in the locality referred to. Our readers no doubt will recollect that Messrs Hiding and Co. obtained a lease for twenty-one years, on certain conditions, of 2,000 acres of land, for the express purpose of utilising the fish in the waters connected with the land demised to them. We trust that their enterprise and energy will meet with deserved success. Investments of this character afford employment to boat builders fishermen, seamen, bush carpenters, and other tradesmen, and an article of export is added to the already numerous productions of the Colony. Captain M'Leau writes as follows: “To feasts Harding and Cq., Dunedin. « Gentlemen, —In reply to your favor of this day’s date, requesting my opinion as to the facilities afforded in Dusky Hound and parts adjacent for a fishery settlement, 1 nave to say that the Hound is a most delightful spot, and parts of it are a perfect paradise to live in. Belative to anchorage and shelter, the largest ships in the world could be anchored with the greatest safety Ifiere afe many varieties of fish, and timber for domestic and fish-curing purposes is plentiful. There is an abundance of fresh water and when a portion of the timber and scrub is cleared, there will be access to some fine land for cultivation. This is in the immediate vicinity of Facile Harbor. 1 ’
