PORT CHALMERS MAYORALTY
The election for Mayor took place yesterday. Very little interest was taken by the ratepayers compared with previous elections. At 4.50 the Returning Officer (Mr H. M'Dermid) came out in front of the Town Hall, and declared the result as follows :
High South East Middle , Ward. Ward. Ward. Ward. M Kinnon ... 60 14 24 26 Innis ... 36 9 26 31 Total—M‘Kinnon 124 Innis 103 Majority for M‘Kinnon ... 21 He therefore declared Mr Andrew M‘Kinnon elected as Mayor for Port Chalmers for the ensuing year. The announcement was greeted with loud cheers. Mr M’Kinnon then came forward and thanked those ratepayers who had voted for him in electing him as their Mayor, and pledged himself to forward the interest of the town during his term of office. Mr Innis said he was not dissatisfied with the result of the election. The ratepayers had a right to elect the man they, thought most fit; and perhaps it was better that Mr M ‘Kinnon should be in, and that he (Mr Innis) shi uld be out.
Mr M -Kinnon moved a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, which Mr Innis seconded.
