Wellington, July 3. At the opening of ijhirfce§q members assembled in the Legislative Ooqhcil, and thirty-five in the House of Representatives! Notices of motion regarding the usual sessional Committees were made.
Messrs Gibbs and Montgomery took the oath and their seats.
The Premier laid a batch of papers on the table, chiefly regarding Immigration, including copies of the Handbook of New Zealand. . A Bill to abolish imprisonment for debt was introduced by the Premier, and read a first time.
Premier explained that the reason of Mr M Lean’s absence was that he left Wellington under the impression that the House would not meet before the 16fch July; but ho was expected back this week.
A number of notices of motion were made, and the House adjourned till Tuesday. A box containing money and ship’s papers, belonging to H M.S. Challenger, has been stolen. The box was picked up at Pipitia, and the papers were safe, but the money was all gone. The thief is undiscovered.
, , „ , _ Auckland, July 3. J ohn irascoe and James Dobbins have been arreted for murdering Wm. Wright Carter in a Maori brothel. They knocked him down and kipked him, breaking his aim in two places, and inflicting other injuries, which resulted fatally, In the Police Court, the charge of incendiarism against Alexander Brown has closed, after many days* hearing. The prisoner was committed for trial.
The Local Committee of the Colonial Bank of New Zealand are holding meetings in various parts of the country districts, and are receiving good support. A large number of shares are applied for.
July 4. A back store, with a wooden building attached, belonging to Mr Olson, manufacturer the Tomato sauce, was burned this morning. When first observed, the fire was coming through the lower windows, and nothing could be done to save the store, which was filled with sauce and bottles. The stock and premises are insured in the New Zealand Office for L2 000 and in the Royal for LI,OOO. ’ ’
mu xr „ , , Christchurch, July 3. .the New Zealand Shipping Company has received telegraphic advices from London announcing the arrival of the following ships:— Duke of Edinburgh and Star of India, from Lyttelton; Dunfillan, from Otago. Also, the departure from London of the Carisbrook Castle, Columbus, Strathnaver, Loch Earn, and Tweed. The vessels being loaded by the company at the end of June were:—Eurynome, Canterbury, Cartevale, Wellington, Lennox Castle, Otago, and Stanley Castle,

_. . Oamabu, July 3. The contractors of the Waiareka Railway entertained about forty of the principal merrr iV® settlers to dinner, in the Masonic Hall. The Mayor, Dr Wait, was chairman, and the Hon. > H. J. Miller, and J. M'Lean, Esq., vice-chairmen. Several congratulatory speeches were made, and the affair passed off successfully.
