Drunkenness. —Gavin Cougball was fined ss, with the option of twenty-four hours’ imprisonment.

Got his Deserts. —Edward Tooghey was charged with stealing fourteen corhsacks, of the value of 14 s . tlje property of Messrs Anderson and Mowatt, deposed to the missing bags being their property, and Mr Muir, basket-maker, that prisoner went into his shop, and throwing the bags on the floor, offered to sell them for 2s 6d. Witness had no doubt that ho would have taken Is for them.—Prisoner was then charged with having, on the previous day, stolen from the premises of R. W. M‘Gbee one pair of moleskin trowsers, of the value of 8< 6d -The case was clearly proved.— SubInspector Malla'd said that prisoner went into a re|tauraht the other d%y, deliberately ■'At down and had his dinner, and after having had it said he had no money, and that be had no intention of paying for it. When brought up before Mr Bathgate the next day, he coolly said that he would do the same thing again, and conducted himself most impudently while in Court. He was an immigrant by the Asia.—His Worship ; They are not an agreeable acquisition to the popula-tion.—Sub-1 nspec or Mallard: Indeed they are not; some are very bad.—His Worship said that prisoner seemed to have come here with the determination of Ifvipg on other people. On the first charge against him—that of stealing fourteen oornsacks—he would be sent fo gaol far one month, with hard labor; and for the second an additional month’s imprisonment, to take effect from the expiry of the first term.
