TURNING THE FIRST SOD.
[By Telegraph.] Oamaru, July 2. The Waisreka Valley Hail way being about to be commeuccd, the first sod was to-day turned by his ftonor the Superintendent, near the junction of the north with the main line, abont a mile from Oamaru. A considerable number ot town and country residents were present, though the notice was short ; also Mr D. Reid, who accompanied the Superintendent, The contractors vUssra Morris n and Co., haring, afterprayer by the Rev. A. Gifford, called on the Su erintendent to perform the ceremony, bis Honor took nff his coat, and, having dug a harrow-load of sods, wheeled them along the planks, and deposited them amidst the cheers of the audience. He was fodowed by the Mayor aod the Rev. Mr Gifford, and speeches were afterwards delivered by his Honor, Mr :; eid, the Mayor, and Mr M'Lean. a dinner takws pKce to-night at Oamaru. It is to be regretted th it bis Honor cannot stay for it. The contractors intend putting about 250 men to work. His Honor and Mr Reid visited the harbor works, and expressed great satisfaction at their progress.
