ANOTHER FIRE AT AUCKLAND.

(By Telegraph.)

. „ , Auckland, July 2. A fire broke out in the store of G. W. Owen, Lower Queen street, adjoining Owen and Gra- , aaiu s > shortly after seven. The flames have just broken through the windows, and it threatens to be a most destructive fire. There was no water for half an hour after the fire was discovered, owing to no organised fire brigade. Mr J- Mackay’s son was carried out of Oweu aud Graham’s store suffocated. Dr Wright is with him, and he is expected to recover. The wind being S. \V. it is likely to burn the block, including the Waitemata Hotel. A later telegram says :—The fire was confined to G. W. Owen’s building, in which it originated, It was extinguished chiefly through the splendid supply of water from Thornton, bmith, and Frith s steam fire-engine connected with their mill, and situated a few stores above. The adjoining premises occupied by Gilfillan and the Harbor Board twice caught fire, but were soon extinguished. After the roef fell in the danger to the surrounding premises was comparatively small, the solid brick walls rendering the spread of the flames impossible. Ihe store contained kauri gum, paper, &c., which gave out a very heavy smoko, increasing the difficulty and danger encountered by those

engaged m extinguishing the fire ; nevertheless a large number of willing volunteers, including Mr Thomas Russell, mounted the roof, and did good service. Mr Mackay, who was carried out, is recovering. The insurances, so far ascertainable, are G, W. Owen’s, and the Harbor Board, and Gilfillan’s, which belonged to the New Zealand Insurance Company. Owen’s were insured in the Victoria for L4OO, the balance in their own office. Owen’s stock is insured as follows • New Zealand, LI,500; Royal, L 500: Liverpool, London, and Globe, L 50 0; South British, about LbOO. The Victorian office had L1.20U on the three buildings. Their loss will be only about LSO. Nothing was saved from Owen s store.
