London, June 20. Owing to the election at North Durham being declared void on petition, a fresh election has been he’d, resulting in the return of Mr C. M. Palmer, a Liberal,-and Mr Elliott, a Conservative, in the room of Messrs Lothian Bell and U. M Palmer, Liberals. The deaths are announced of the Kev. J. C. M. Bellew, and Jules Gabriel Janin, a French critic and author. The last New Zealand loan is officially quoted. A Canadian 4 per cent, loan of L 4,000,000 at 90 has been subscribed. The Sublime Porte refused to ratify the contract for the Turkish loan of L19,000,0Q0 on the terms announced. The failures are reported of Snelgrove and Co., merchants, Mark Lane, for L3u0,000, and a Belfast linen manufacturing firm for nearly LLfioo,too. J Wool continues firm. The arrivals for next sales are over 130,000 bales. Wheat is drooping. Hemp, common to medium, has been sold at Ll7 to L 24. The Turkish ship Kars has sunk in the Sea of Marmora, and 320 persons were drowned. June 22. The Agricultural Union has resolved on a vigorous course of action to defeat the lockout, and has invited Arch to take laborers to Canada.
The House of Lords* judgment in the Mordaunt case authorises the continuance of the divorce proceedings. A submarine cable has been successfully laid from Lisbon to Pernambuco. It is now open for business.
Paris, June 20. The Assembly rejected the further important clauses of the Municipal Bill, but the Government proceeded with the measure, and claimed the right to nominate Mayors. The Assembly eventually adopted the amendment by 358 to 329, prolonging for two years the Government prerogative of nominating Mayors. . . . Rome, June 20. The Pope, in receiving the congratulations of the Sacred College on the anniversary of his accession, said he refused a proposal from mgh personages for reconciliation with the King of Italy, because any concession he believed equally injurious to the Church and to society. General Garibaldi is seriously ill at Caprera.
