CITY COUNCIL.

The special meeting of this body yesterday was attended by the Mayor and Councillors Prosser, Walter, Ramsay, Reeves, Gibson, and fieck.

In reporting the result of his interview with the Superintendent, the Mayor remarked that he understood Messrs Sparrow and Co. did not intend to build on the reclaimed land after the public feeling that had been manifested. It was also stated that Sparrow and Co. had sold, or were going to sell, their two allotments. —Cr. Prosser observed that it was absolutely necessary for the well-being «f the town that the recommendation of the Surveyor be carried out. He then proposed the adoption of the draft regulation which provided that all the reclaimed land between Stuart street and the Anderson's Bay road, and all land within that part of the City hereafter to be reclaimed, should'comprise part of the inner area. The motion was carried.

The Town Clerk mentioned that the Act stated that all licenses on which fees were not paid on June 30 were void, and he asked what was to be done in the matter, as some licensees had not yet paid —Cr. Ramsay thought it would be a great hardship that people who had been in the habit of beiug allowed a few days beyond time always, should lose their licenses iu that way.—Cr. Waltkr moved that the Corporation Solicitor be consulted. If there were a possibility of getting out of the difficulty, and accepting the fees, the Corporation should do so, because it was a well known fact that the Licensing Act was really an abortion. It was looked upon by almost all the Commissioners wha had to administer it in such a light. In C anterbury, for instance, the decisions given under it were not similar to those here,/—-It was agreed to consult the Solicitor.-■
