PRESENTATION TO CAPTAIN WAIN.

This afternoon his Worship the Mayor, Councillors Reck, Gibson, Prosser, Hamsav, Reeves, and Walter; and Messrs Grant, H. Jack, Meares, Henderson Law, and G. B\ Reid, representatives of various Insurance Companies, met at Wain’s Hotel, to present Mr Job Wain with the testimonial and service of plate, which ws have already described. The late hour at which the presentation took place readers it impossible to do more than state the facts. His Worship the Maydr, on behalf of the Council and the City, exp, eased the obligation due to Mr "Wain for his services in re-organising and keeping together the F.re Brigade, which has rendered good se<vice to the (Jity whenever .fires have occurred. On behalf of the Insurance Companies, Mr Hill Jack expressed their sense of the value of Mr Wain’s services, and the pleasure they felt in acknowledging them in the manner adopted. Mr Wain, in returning thanks, remarked that owing to the increase of the City thirty members were too few for dealing with large fires, and recommended an increase of their number. He eulogised the zeal of the members of the Brigade, who both at practice and. in case of fire were seldom absent, and said that to their willing co-operation and a full supply of water was owing the success in checking fires that seemed likely to be dangerous. As most of the Brigade were working men, he considered their zealous persistence in their work the more meritorious, but “once a tfremau always a fiiemau” seemed to be the rule.
