THE SAILORS' HOME.

The meeting convened by the Mayor was attended by the Bishop of Dunedin (Dr Nevill), the Hon. Major Bichardson, Bevs. Messrs Leeson and Edwards, Mr Fish, M.P.C., Captain Ihomson (Harbor Master), Messrs Walter. Graham, Mudie, Stout. M.P.C., strode, Captain Clark, &c. The Mayor presided. Mr R. B. Martin sketched the constitution of the home—the institution to consist ot a president, vice-president, trustees, treasurer, committee of management, honorary physician, chaplain, secretary, master, and toe name of the institution to be ihe Dunedin Sailors’ Home;” the design of tneinstitution to be to provide a suitable home tor the fjeamen of the mercantile service trading to this port; to provide maintenance and a comfortable home for the seamen while on shore ; no infirm or diseased person to be admitted ; subscribers of balf-a-guinea to be ent tied to vote at the election of officers] • owners and masters of ships subscribing - clergymen preaching and collecting; and mercantile firms contributing ,to be also entitled to vote. He suggested that the superintendent should be nominated President, and Mr Strode, who came from sailor stock Vice-President. Captain Fox, of the Scimitar (who apologised for his non-attend-ance), had forwarded a subscription of L 55 collected on board his ship.—(Hear.) Mr Fish said it. was premature to appoint office-bearers, and suggested that a provisional committee should be Appointed, One member of the Provincial Council had expressed his willing, ess to hand over half of his honorarium (L 24) in aid of the Home and no doubt the example would be fol* lowed. He moved “That a Committee, consisting of Captain Clark, the Mayor of Hunedin, Messrs E. B. Cargill, Ritchie, R. B. Martin, Kamsay, Stout, Captain Thomson. Street, 'I ewsley, Walter, Strode, Black, W F. wheeler, Walcott, Prosser, Rattray’ Houghton, G. F. Reid, Guthrie, orodnok, and the mover, be formed for the purpose of collecting subscriptions, drawing up a code of rules, and reporting to a meet mg of subscribers to be called a fortnight hence. Carried unanimously. . The Bishop op Dunkdin expressed his intention of doing all he could to further the movement.
