Mr Hooper reports that the share market seems to have taken a turn for the better, transactions for the week having been numerous, and prices generally satisfactory, especially in some of the mining otocks. He has sold a very large number of the Shotover Terrace shares at a reduced rate; but the general opinion is that this stock will attain its former figure; its present quotation is 6s 6d. Star of the East are at L 5 2s 6d ; Elizabeth, L2 5s ; Heart of Oak, L2 15s; Standard Insurance, 14s; National Insurance, 30s ; South British, L2 10s; Friendly Societies’ Hall, 365; Temperance Hall, 35s ; Mosgiel Factory at pay. THE LABOR MARKET. Mr Skene reports as follows:-The demand for labor of all kinds is as brisk as ever, and the Wants of employers are as numerous as they were before the large arrivals by late ships. Whether late arrivals are suitable or not, they are gradually getting mixed up with the population. On trial some of them improve on acquaintance. Employer* in many cases are putting up with little discrepancies rather than go without. Most of the single people are at work. It will be a little trying for the married folks, with the winter on us, but they will soon get over their troubles, and forget them, as old hands before them have done. Far too many of the immigrants are entirely without trades or calling, _ which makes it very difficult to deal with them. Ploughmen, of the right stamp, are almost extinct. Female servante are more plentiful, but hard to deal with. Many private families have to do without them. A good many hotel servants are out of work at present. Wages do not vary much. During the week just closed, the following have been the figures :—Masons, 15s per" day ; carpenters, 12s, 13s, and 14s ; bricklayers, the same ; bootmakers, tailors, &c., are fully employed, and averaging from L 3 to L 4 per week on piece work.
