THE RACES.
The 500 persons who congregated on the Forbury course this afternoon must have had a very lively time of. it. All four .started, and got off at the first ; attempt, Bushman leading, The Plum last .It was a capital race all through, the horses keeping well together and taking their jumps beautifully. , When,about half-a-inile from home. Kildare took the lead, The Plum following him .up; and at the last hurdle Bushman fell, throwing away his chance. Coining np. .the straight Peter and Williams had to Use the, whip and to ho purpose, Kildare; 'coining in a winner by five lengths, The; Plum second, Falcon half-a-length behind. Time, Smipt. The winning horse was received with as .loud, cheers as the small, dumber of people present could raise. , Maiden Plate, of 25 sovs. Entrance, 2 sovs. One mile and a quarter, weight; .for age. May- Queen carried 4Jlb overweight, Boxer BJlb, fc’ohoolboy-1 Jib, greve IJlb. ’ After one break away, in which Congreve 1 went about 100 yds, the lot was despatched on even terms, with the exception of dchoolbey, who was rather late; Passing the Stand, Miss Bow© and Boxer led, bat the latter was soon pumped out and jfell back. On the far side of the-course' Congreve went up tq within a length of the leader,' where ha hung till coming up ' the straight,. -when he appeared beaten, but te the surprise of all, oh the -whip being applied he came again, and after-a hard struggle won a splendid race . -from Miss Rowe by three * quarters of a length./ Schoolboy was a'poor third, May Queen fourth. Time, 2min 30sec. Handicap Trottino Race, of 25 sovs. The second horse to receive 5 sovs from the stakes. Nomination, 2 sovs. Three optional saddle or harness. Very little betting] Maggie carried 19|lbs overweight, and Mystery the same. Modesty was scratched. Seven started, Mr Dodson running only Mystery. At the start Polly Green would net budge from the post for about a minute, thus losing, pa it turned out, all chance. At the first round Tommy led j Fanny having dropped back, Jessie was second, Maggie third, Polly Green last but one, and going well. At the second round the order was the same, except that Pelly Green had got fourth place, Mystery and Guy being out of »t. In the last round Polly Green was a quarter of a mile behind, Tommy still lead- ' .y hen within 100 yards of home Jes®le ® appeared to be boring Tommy on to the rati, and this being continued Fraser struck Jessie over the head with hia whip ■ * nd Tommy went ahead again. This little scene caused great confusion, tho result being that Tommy was never, caught, Maggie I good second, Jessie third. Time, lOmin 17sec., A protest vvas entered against Tommy .;: Py.the owner of Maggie, on the ground that beigaflqped, but after consideration it was
Birthday Handicap, 50sova. Captain Hutchison’s Mabel ... (Lynch) 1 ; Mr Broadway’s Miss Rowo 2 Mr Raven’s Baroness Burdett 3 Betting : 2to I against the Earl; 2to 1 Envy and Lydia; 4 to 1 Border Lad and Miss Rowe. Captain Hutchison declared ; to win with the Earl. Earl of Lynne. Border Lad, Envy, and Lydia also started. Mabel and the Earl got off badly, and the latter never had a show. Ihe horses kept well together till nearing the distance, when Miss Rowe, who had been leading, was joined by Mabel, who gradually crept up, and, with a splendid finish, won by a nose. Time, 3min ISsec. Selling Race, 25 sovs. Mr Smith’s Wee Lad i Mr Smellie’s Schoolboy ... ... ... 2
